Jorinde's World

Jorinde's world is (very) loosely based on the Dutch Golden Age, with the addition of weatherworking magic.

Weatherworking is a skill possessed by some people which allows them to control the elements: air, water, fire and earth. Most weatherworkers can manipulate air and water. Very few can work with fire and earth.

As with any talent, some people are naturally more gifted than others, while training and practice can strengthen and improve users' abilities.

Commercial use of weatherworking skills is controlled by the Weatherworkers Guild. It licences weatherworkers who've graduated from one of its five academies and completed a period of supervised training.

Weatherworkers who aren't members of the Guild are allowed to use their skills in service of their family's business or by joining a business that has already employed a close family member, such as a parent or sibling, for several years.

The presence of weatherworking in Jorinde's world means that technology, the industrial revolution and society and culture in general have taken a slightly different path to our own real world history.
